THE famous Riace Bronzes, two 5th Century BC bronzes of Greek warriors, have received an unorthodox style make-over in a photo shoot.
The photos of the Riace Bronzes in thongs and bridal veil were taken by photographer Gerald Bruneau.
The Warhol protege depicts the Riace Bronzes in leopard thong and a heliotrope boa in the photo shoot which took place six months ago in the National Archaeological Museum in Regio Calabria, Italy, after the reopening in December following restoration of the statues.
The photos were featured on Dagospia blog site, and are now all over the Italian media.
Bruneau, correspondent for major newspapers, creator of ad campaigns and an artist whose work has appeared in solo and group shows, is not new to such controversy.
In the past he had wrapped in a bright red tulle the Paolina Borghese on display in the Galleria Borghese in Rome.
The photo shoot was totally "unauthorized," according to Simonetta Bonomi, superintendent of Archaeological Heritage of Calabria. She said a police investigation has been launched prior to possible prosecution.
